Choosing Online Therapy
Technical Issues
  • Are you comfortable using the internet in general?
  • Do you have a web camera and microphone or are you willing to purchase them? (not necessary for chat and email counseling)
  • Are you comfortable using web camera, chat, and email?
  • Do you have access to a computer with a fast connection? [Especially important for use with webcam.]
  • Is this computer in a private place in your home or other location?
  • Is your own computer secure so that others in your household are not able to access your private emails or chat logs if you were to store them on the computer?
  • If using chat, are you a proficient typist, can you type nearly as fast as you think? Or are you comfortable with a slower pace of communication?
Personal Issues
  • Are you comfortable asking and being asked to explain or clarify questions regarding meaning of messages when using non visual communication such as email and chat?
  • Are you uncomfortable with the idea of seeking out a therapist in your local community because of privacy issues?
  • Are you yourself in the mental health field and have a difficult time finding someone who doesn’t know you?
  • Are you in a high density community and desire service in the comfort of your own home or office, rather than add more time to your busy day driving to service?
  • Are you anxious about leaving your own home and would like to start the therapy process in familiar surroundings?
  • Are you in a rural area and have limited or no access to a mental health care professional?
